Abstract and Keywords

Here we review and summarize research in the neuroscience of rhythm, synthesizing evidence from fMRI, EEG, MEG, patient studies, and animal studies. We first cover models of rhythm perception, including the evidence that supports or challenges these models, as well as their strengths and limitations. We then highlight the fundamental role of the motor system in timing and rhythm processes, with an emphasis on the roles of specific motor brain areas in rhythm perception and production. The discussion of brain areas includes work that dissociates the neural mechanisms of different aspects of rhythm, such as the perception of beat and meter, as well as the influence of factors such as musical training and attention. We conclude with studies that compare beat perception across species.
