Abstract and Keywords

Theory and research on percepts of meter and rhythm are reviewed. Metric hierarchies with embedded time spans differ from rhythmic patterns of serial time spans. Two theoretical approaches to metrical/non-metrical patterns are contrasted: clock model and a Dynamic Attending Theory (DAT). The former describes meter perception based on encodings of ticks of an internal clock and its clock intervals; DAT assumes meter is perceived with entraining activities of neural attending oscillations operating on different embedding levels. A new DAT hypothesis, the Metric Binding hypothesis, extends attending mechanisms to include learning. Simultaneously active oscillations at different hierarchical levels are assumed to bind together to internalize a metric category. Other topics concern distinctions between meter, as an acquired skill, and rhythm, as innately perceived, and salience of accents marking time spans.
