Abstract and Keywords

This chapter explores the personal characteristics of individuals, their immediate circumstances, the larger social situation, and how they join in shaping caring and helpful behavior. The active bystandership this chapter is concerned with includes saving the lives of endangered people as well as actions to inhibit the evolution of extreme violence against groups of people, such as genocide, mass killing, or terrorism. The chapter then considers ways to promote active bystandership to prevent violence between groups and develop peaceful societies. It describes work in Rwanda to help people gain an “experiential understanding” of the origins of group violence and avenues to prevention. It considers ways of humanizing the “other,” healing from victimization, and the development of altruism born of suffering, generating moderate in place of extreme respect for authority, and developing constructive ideologies—visions of a future that can embrace all groups. The chapter then discusses the socialization of “inclusive caring” and moral courage. It considers positive values, and the notion of a “healing society,” as part of the exploration of the evolution of harmony and peace.
