Abstract and Keywords

This chapter analyzes first language acquisition in the context of Construction Grammar. It provides an overview of usage-based research in first language acquisition that is based on assumptions of Construction Grammar and considers some basic assumptions of Construction Grammar that underlie the usage-based approach to first language acquisition. The chapter also considers the lexical specificity of early pivot schemas that children use, and their relationship to the verb-argument constructions which typify adult language.
