Abstract and Keywords

Despite being an important aspect of children's cognitive development, future thinking has only recently become a topic of study in developmental psychology. Nonetheless, much progress has been made in the past few years in elucidating the concept of future thinking and designing methods to measure this capacity. In addition to reviewing these methods, this chapter discusses several factors that may play an important role in the development of future thinking, including theory of mind, executive function, and language. It also touches upon the relation between future thinking and memory and, finally, the role that imagination and pretense may play in the development of future thinking.

Keywords: cognitive development, episodic future thinking, episodic memory, future-oriented behaviors, imagination
