(p. ix) Acknowledgments

I have been fortunate to work with many smart and large-hearted people on this project. Both Theo Calderara and Sheila Davaney have provided invaluable advice, support, and encouragement. Jillian O’Connor, the project manager, sweated all the details and the prose is richer for it. Words cannot cover my gratitude to her.

All thirty-six writers remained gracious and professional even when we lobbed edits, pressed deadlines, and demanded cuts. Many worked outside their comfort zone and the fledgling field of religion and media studies can only benefit from their efforts.

As ever, I appreciate the fortitude of family members—especially Chris Bugbee and Isabelle Winston, as they, too, have lived with this book. I am also grateful for support from Suzanne Winston, Sara Walters-Bugbee, Erin Walters-Bugbee, and Bill Winston.

I especially want to acknowledge Nick Street, who has been my steadfast colleague for the past five years. Nick has been the yin to my yang, and his humor, friendship, and thoughtfulness are gifts that can never be repaid. For his professional commitment to news, his intellectual passion for religion, and his cheerful willingness to explore the margins, Nick embodies the spirit of this collection. (p. x)
