Abstract and Keywords

Norman Corwin once described radio with a phrase that today could be applied to any of the technologies that make possible the digitally connected world: “the miracle, worn ordinary now.” Despite the variety of religious expression on early radio, however, information about religion—news—was virtually nonexistent. A survey of trends in American radio from its beginnings to the present suggests that the void in religion news coverage was not an oversight, but rather a product of the ambivalence about the place and purpose of religious content in broadcast media. Through the National Religious Radio Committee, the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America proposed five guidelines to the National Broadcasting Company, providing a template for the norms of religious broadcasting for years to come.
