Abstract and Keywords

This chapter provides a description of the major models of how counseling groups change over time. Particular attention is given to the predominant framework, the progressive stage model. However, other models reviewed are the life-cycle model, cyclic model, punctuated equilibrium model, and approaches derived from chaos/complexity theory. This chapter considers the question of whether a group’s development affects members’ abilities to accomplish their goals. Finally, it addresses the application of developmental thinking in unstructured and structured groups and develops the implications of group developmental theory for leadership activities.
