Abstract and Keywords

The collapse of Teotihuacan as a major center in the seventh century ad was part of a widespread series of changes that occurred throughout Mesoamerica at that time. The nature and causes of these changes and of the polities and economies that developed in the subsequent centuries of the Epiclassic (ca. 600–900 ad ) have been studied by many archaeologists working in central Mexico over the past four decades. This article discusses the highlights of these and other studies and offers an assessment of our current understandings.
