Since this Oxford Handbook deals with sound and a book is an overwhelmingly visual medium, we have taken advantage of the Web to post sound samples of some of the sonic material considered by contributors. At the companion website, authors of many of the individual chapters have posted pertinent examples that can be listened to by following the links at the website. Occasionally there are visuals, such as videos, which accompany the sound samples; one of the major themes of our handbook is that the visual and sonic often work together. Enjoy what you hear (and see) and, if you find more relevant examples, do not hesitate to let us know: the beauty of the Web is that material can be continually updated there.
