Abstract and Keywords

Adequate amounts of good-quality sleep are vital for optimal functioning. Children and adults with learning disabilities (LD) appear to be at increased risk of suffering from various forms of sleep disturbance, with implications for their daytime functioning, caregivers’ stress, and the professionals involved in their care. This chapter will discuss current understanding about the nature, prevalence, and etiology of sleep disturbance in individuals with LD and reflect on special considerations of assessment and treatment (including sleep hygiene, behavioral therapy, chronotherapy, light therapy, and melatonin) for this population. Limitations in current knowledge are highlighted along with future research priorities.
