Abstract and Keywords

Counseling services, including individual counseling and group counseling, can serve as an invaluable service provision by school psychologists. While individual psychological assessment services and teacher and parent consultation often occupies the bulk of a workday, a wide spectrum of psychological problems affecting children has increasingly amplified the importance of individual and group counseling initiatives. Given the complexity of individual and group counseling interventions, though, and given the complex nature of counseling practices when applied within the schools, many school psychologists find contemporary counseling challenging. This article reviews mental health issues impacting children’s mental health, considers differing individual and group counseling models, examines contemporary legal issues inherent in school practice, and considers future directions.
