Abstract and Keywords
Literally, millennialism refers to the belief, expressed in the book of Revelation, that Christ will establish a one-thousand-year reign of the saints on earth before the Last Judgment. More broadly defined, millennialists expect a time of super-natural peace and abundance here on earth. This article surveys millenarian movements and outlines a typology for classifying such groups. The author sets his analysis of contemporary movements in the context of a broader analysis of historically prior movements and movements that have arisen in the so-called third world in response to the intrusion of colonial powers. The article concludes with a suggested agenda for future research.
