This chapter provides a basic foundation of the neuroscience, behavior, and development of attention processes and the role that different aspects of attention play in social and emotional behavior. It begins with a brief overview of Posner’s model of attention. It then discusses the normative development of the orienting system and impairments in this system that have been identified in autism and anxiety disorders. The following section reviews the normative development of the executive attention system before shifting to selective deficits in the aforementioned clinical populations. The chapter concludes by discussing future directions for research on the interface between emotion and attention.
