Abstract and Keywords

Rather than positing a single international style in a single language—English—this article argues that global modernisms draw attention to cultural difference, destabilizes universalist idioms, and historicizes contexts. British modernism, largely worked out a century before, represented the values of the emerging discipline of English Literature. This article explores the opportunities and impediments which those values presented to translated literatures. British modernism' international interests, and its principle of foreignization in literature and translation, created an opportunity for John Cournos to publish translations and essays on Russian modernist literature in The Egoist. Cournos represented Russia as moving through the same process of modernity as Britain had done, a singular modernity, while seeing its cultural effect in terms of an alternative, if comparable, modernism.
