Abstract and Keywords

After the Great War, modernist artists beyond Europe' traditional geopolitical and metaphysical borders saw in this moment an opportunity to revitalize both Europe and their local milieux by arguing that the entire West might find new life in previously overlooked corners of the world. This article examines interlocking projects in radically different contexts that connected to one another along the political, cultural, and gendered margins of European modernisms. It details the assemblages of Spanish and Pan-American modernisms that Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset, American journalist Waldo Frank, and Argentine writer Victoria Ocampo attached to Europe across borders. These dynamic interchanges, with their great, continental ambitions, and problematic, sometimes contradictory cultural politics, register the work of a transnational modernist critique to imagine the Western organism as born anew along its margins.
