Abstract and Keywords

Chapter 36 considers the difficulty in defining exoticism, in determining its contentious relationship to the concept of orientalist representation and to the analysis of cross-cultural influence, and the attempts that have been made to establish a periodization of its historical development. The discussion provides an overview of scholarly approaches to exoticism over time, focusing on those scholars who have been most active in this field and on the influence of the cultural historian and critic Edward Said. The chapter concludes with a case study of the persistence of exoticism in modernist and postmodernist operas, including in specific works by Arnold Schoenberg, Roger Sessions, Igor Stravinsky, and John Corigliano.
