Abstract and Keywords

This article discusses the primary education of Romans, which was narrowly linked to Rome's history and the greatness of the early Romans. The discussion begins with a section on the differences in social class and gender, where the elite enjoyed high standards of moral education, while those belonging to the lower classes did not learn reading and writing. The next section looks at the role of parents in education, and then moves on to examine teachers and “schools” that the children attended. Some schools were located on the streets, while others were found on the corner of the forum. It then studies what the students' days were like and how they progressed through the primary and secondary levels of education. Finally, a discussion of the main goals of primary education for Roman children is presented.
