Abstract and Keywords

This chapter describes the production of a migration crisis in Hungary and examines the politics it authorizes. After providing context into the emergence of the discourse of crisis in Hungary, the chapter examines the mechanisms used by the Hungarian authorities to keep the crisis alive in spite of the limited number of people receiving asylum in the country. Finally, the chapter studies the connections between the “migration crisis” and the marginalization of other social groups, particularly Roma. It argues that both are connected to the adoption of capitalist modes of development underpinned by moral economies that rely on the production of various “others.”

Céline Cantat

Céline Cantat is a Marie Curie individual fellow at the Centre for Policy Studies, Central European University, Budapest. She works on MigSol: Migration Solidarity and Acts of Citizenship along the Balkan Route, a project which examines solidarity along that route. Céline holds a PhD in Refugee Studies from the University of East London, and spent a year at Migrinter, University of Poitiers, as a Marie Curie early stage researcher. Céline has been involved in several migrant solidarity networks in London and Paris, as well as with refugee groups in Syria. Her interests include globalization and migration, migration solidarity, racism and exclusion in Europe, and state formation and dynamics of mass displacement.

Prem Kumar Rajaram

Prem Kumar Rajaram is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology at Central European University, Budapest. He is the Head of the CEU Open Learning Initiative which offers educational programs for refugees and asylum-seekers. He is the author of Ruling the Margins: Colonial Power and Administrative Rule in the Past and Present (Routledge, 2016) and the co-editor (with Carl Grundy-Warr) of Borderscapes: Hidden Geographies and Politics at Territory’s Edge (University of Minnesota Press, 2008). His research focuses on the common marginalizations of refugees and other subaltern groups particularly in relation to capitalism and the state, and on colonial histories of labor and capitalism. He holds a PhD in International Relations from the London School of Economics.
