Abstract and Keywords

This chapter provides a historical account of the Society for Music Teacher Education (SMTE) from its inception in 1982 through 2015. Because of a marked uptick in the frequency and robust nature of SMTE’s activity since the first SMTE Symposium in 2005, the majority of the chapter is devoted to describing the SMTE Symposium events during the time they were held at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (2005–2015). After a historical account of SMTE from its inception through 2004, the chapter describes precursors that led to the first SMTE Symposium in 2005, explores the evolution of ideas and actions that occurred across the six SMTE Symposia through 2015, reviews the challenges and achievements of the symposia, and discusses outcomes for SMTE.
