Abstract and Keywords
Understanding content, what is in a text or an image, is highly subjective and culturally specific. Being so far removed from the culture of ancient Egypt, we are often at a disadvantage when trying to interpret through this culture’s frames of reference. This chapter suggests three lines of inquiry to consider what constitutes content. These lines of inquiry focus on (1) context—the surroundings of the object on which the text or image were found; (2) multimodality—relationships between text and image; and (3) repertoire and variation—locating the image or the inscription in relation to contemporaneous elements like it. Employing sources from different periods, it considers the assumptions of these three paths, their methodologies, their advantages, and their limitations.
