Abstract and Keywords

The present chapter provides an overview of existing quantitative research on New Religious Movements, the New Age and Neopagan movements. Covering both demographic studies of specific groups, studies conducted in a specific locality and census data, the chapter draws a broad and comprehensive outline of quantitative approaches to alternative spiritualities. It also addresses areas and questions that require further scholarly attention. There is a general lack of longitudinal studies, and many groups that have yet to be studied. Local variances and adaptations constitute another lacuna. Furthermore, the ‘common knowledge’ about NRMs tends to naïvely echo findings from the earliest wave of NRM studies conducted in the 1970s. A call is made for further and more systematic quantitative investigations, and interdisciplinary cooperation.
