Abstract and Keywords

Here the author describes her work and that of other dance artists working in hospitals, two of whom were interviewed specifically for this chapter. She outlines the methods used and the range of skills and experience that dance artists bring to their practice. She also presents some of the issues and challenges inherent in this work, and discusses the values that underpin community dance practice. Although she describes hospital dance art as a practice that is different from dance movement psychotherapy, she argues that creative engagement that focuses on people’s experiences can contribute to wellbeing.

Keywords: dance as art, clinical settings, hospital, creativity, reflexivity, arts intervention, dementia
