Abstract and Keywords

This chapter integrates the theoretical concept of well-being from positive psychology with a developmental-personality perspective on work and relationships from vocational psychology. Performance evaluations that focus on the traditional tasks of teaching, research and scholarship, and service are expanded into a sustainable faculty development program. Composing a continuing well-being narrative stimulated by faculty virtues and character strengths addresses deeper questions about personal and professional flourishing in the academic life. Detailed examples are provided that link work tasks and relationships to 24 character strengths at various stages of a faculty member’s career and are applicable to transdisciplinary, multicultural, and multigenerational audiences.

Keywords: faculty development, well-being, flourishing, work, virtues, character strengths, narratives, performance evaluations, research, service
