Abstract and Keywords

The authors attempt to raise issues for consideration and offer provide guidance on sound pedagogy for teaching Child and Adolescent Development courses. They first outline the nature of this course by describing who is enrolled in these courses. Second, they discuss decisions regarding class content, including content mastery, valuable teaching resources, adapting to suit instructor and student needs, the ever-conflicting depth over breadth, and selecting a textbook. Next, the authors discuss assessment within the context of these courses, which includes topics such as skills, knowledge, writing, and authentic assessment. Fourth, they emphasize the importance on the need to apply developmental science. This includes child and adolescent observations and a multimedia approach to application. Finally, strategies for engaging students in Child and Adolescent Development courses are presented.
