Abstract and Keywords

Tourism has been a factor shaping the character of the Valley of the Kings since ancient times. But in recent decades, the growth of mass tourism has threatened the very existence of its tombs and their decoration. This article examines the many pressures imposed by such tourism. These include demands for more tourist facilities in the valley, overcrowding that can damage the monuments, environmental changes within the tombs, problems that on-site managers are ill-prepared to deal with. Recent projects to remedy these problems are surveyed. Other possible solutions to reduce visitor impact on the tombs are proposed.
