Abstract and Keywords

Dance dramaturgy’s definition is unclear, its history is in dispute, and its actual function within dance production ranges from that of co-creator to dispassionate observer. In terms of a historical understanding of dance dramaturgy, many would cite the partnership between Pina Bausch and Raimund Hoghe in the mid-1990s as a pivotal collaboration between a choreographer and a dance dramaturg. Others would point to a familiar line in the Western theatrical tradition that begins with Aristotle’s Poetics, extends to Gotthold Ephraim Lessing’s Hamburg Dramaturgy, and then focuses on the collaboration between Bertolt Brecht and his fellow dramaturges. Some see dance dramaturgy as a function of dance making, a role shared by the producer, designer, dancers, and the choreographer. Within the last 10-15 years there has been an upsurge of interest in dance dramaturgy. This chapter articulates the contours of an important movement having direct impact on dance-making today.
