Abstract and Keywords

This chapter draws on the insights of the realist tradition to shed light on the international politics of contemporary Asia. The primary focus is Northeast Asia. The chapter spells out and examines five realist-inspired propositions that concern the role of hegemony in managing the Asian regional order, the rise of China and the potential for power transitions, the foreign policy choices of Asian states, the role of historical memory, and the interplay of regional economic and security relations. A concluding section explores sources of regional stability and conflict.
