Abstract and Keywords

While queer Asian American studies has exploded since the mid-1990s, queer Asian American history had undergone a much less dramatic growth. Structural barriers discourage the historian in particular from pursuing a career in queer Asian America, which in turn can inhibit the production of scholarship. Still, the small number of existing publications can push the field forward, incorporating into Asian American history recent developments in queer theory and activism taking place across multiple disciplines. Queer Asian American history can bring to light broadly queer Asians in American history and also initiate alternative historical interpretations that queer the Asian American studies canon.
