Abstract and Keywords

Phonation types are significant in distinguishing meanings in the languages of China, especially in the languages of Sino-Tibetan language family. In this chapter, the voice signals and research methods; the phonation types in vowels, phonation, and articulation; the phonation in initials, finals, and tones; the phonation of voiced aspiration; the phonations in Mandarin tones; the phonation study by high-speed images; and the linguistic significance of phonation types are briefly introduced and explained. From this chapter, an outline of phonetic studies on phonation types in languages of China is presented, while the importance of phonation research to the theoretical linguistics is discussed.
