Abstract and Keywords

This chapter deals with the development of a comprehensive onboarding program at a Big Ten research university. It focuses on the program creation process from needs assessment through program development and implementation, including evaluation systems. The chapter includes detailed information on how the development of the University of Minnesota program was (1) driven from the top down; (2) overseen by a full-time onboarding director; (3) branded to leverage the university messaging; (4) created by partnering with other departments; (5) integrated through central, unit, and supervisory level management; and (6) measured to assure its effectiveness. It also discusses specific examples of the onboarding program itself, as well as future directions for employee engagement at the university.
