Abstract and Keywords

This chapter examines the foreign trade experience and performance of the Pacific Rim economies, focusing on the 21 members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) group. It discusses the basic economic characteristics of this group and explains that their average trade dependence is less than the world average, partly because of the lower trade dependence of Japan and the United States. It analyzes the trade patterns and trade interdependence of a selection of six major APEC economies and provides evidence indicating a positive link between gross domestic product (GDP) growth and foreign trade.
