Abstract and Keywords
This chapter reviews research suggesting that behaviors and active coping strategies that are classifiable under the lifespan development meta-theory of Selection, Optimization, and Compensation (SOC) can lead to more successful outcomes for people in both pre- and post-retirement contexts. First, we introduce SOC and define behaviors that are indicative of Selection, Optimization, and Compensation. Then, we explore how SOC can be mapped onto three key processes often associated with retirement: maintenance of job performance, retirement decision making, and positive retirement adjustment. Finally, directions for future research and a call for more careful attention to the developmental processes that underlie retirement phenomena are levied.
