Abstract and Keywords
Requests for psychiatric consultation in the pediatric medical setting regarding changes in appetite or weight may require a number of diagnostic considerations. Although the consultation may frequently be phrased as one of ruling out the possibility of an eating disorder, the range of potential etiologies is quite diverse and may encompass consideration of multiple organ systems and syndromes. In addition, there is always the possibility of a psychiatric or psychosomatic illness. In this chapter, we review the common medical and psychosomatic syndromes that may be associated with changes in appetite and weight. We also include discussion of some of the common syndromes that present with vomiting, which in turn may contribute to changes in appetite.
