Abstract and Keywords

This chapter presents evidence of early villages and towns, such as Tepe Sialk and the Qazvin plain sites, in northern Iran dating from the late sixth to the mid-fourth millennium BC. In addition to reviewing the principal categories of material culture, such as architecture and ceramics, particular attention is paid to the development of pyrotechnology, metallurgy, glyptic, and the circulation of exotic objects and semiprecious stones. Evidence of social ranking is discussed. The beginnings of long-distance contacts and exchange across Iran are treated as well.
