Abstract and Keywords

This chapter provides a broad view of the history of cognitive and behavioral couples therapy. First, the authors explore the conceptualization of a healthy relationship and establish a theoretical foundation for cognitive and behavioral couple therapy. Next, the chapter describes the major empirically supported treatments within the cognitive behavioral arena such as traditional behavioral couples therapy, cognitive-behavioral couples therapy, and integrative behavioral couples therapy. Then, the chapter highlights techniques that address a variety of specific issues that couples may face such as intimate partner violence and a host of individual disorders commonly treated within dyadic framework including depression, chronic illness, and alcohol abuse. Subsequent sections outline the need for replication and cost-effectiveness studies as well as tailoring treatments to meet the specific needs of couples. Finally, the chapter concludes with a discussion about unifying principles common to effective couples treatments demonstrating shared themes across treatment modalities.
