Abstract and Keywords

Supervisory ratings of individual job performance are the most frequently used and studied manner in which employee performance is assessed. Volumes have been written on performance ratings, what they mean, and how to improve them. Our goal in this chapter is to provide a broad-level summary of the literature on performance ratings. Moreover, we seek to synthesize this literature with respect to best practices for the use of performance ratings as criteria for the evaluation of selection and assessment tools.
