Abstract and Keywords
This chapter compares and assesses employment relations in the BRICS countries, a growing global economic grouping which reflects a shift in economic power from mature economies to emerging markets. These countries are Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The chapter focuses on employment relations in these countries by comparing similarities and differences in their employment relations institutions, regulations, labour markets, and workplace practices. The findings show the diversity and complexity of employment relations and labour markets in these emerging economies. The findings discuss collective bargaining, trade unions, workplace flexibility, and the changing nature of work. The development of informal or casual work through outsourcing and subcontracting in these economies varies but is important. Key areas for further research and policy making are identified.
