Abstract and Keywords
This chapter focuses on the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), a peacekeeping mission formed by the UN Security Council in March 2005 to support the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed by the government of Sudan, dominated by Omar al-Bashir’s National Congress Party (NCP), and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A). It first provides an overview of the civil war in Sudan pitting the predominantly Arabic and Muslim North against the predominantly African and non-Muslim South. It then outlines UNMIS’s mandate, which includes monitoring the ceasefire and the redeployment of forces; assisting in the disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of ex-combatants on both sides; promotion of the rule of law and human rights; and humanitarian assistance and civilian protection. Finally, the chapter evaluates UNMIS’s operational achievements and limitations.
Keywords: peacekeeping, UN Security Council, Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), Sudan, National Congress Party (NCP), Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A)
