Abstract and Keywords

This chapter focuses on the United Nations Observer Mission in Sierra Leone (UNOMSIL), a peacekeeping mission deployed by the UN Security Council from July 1998 to October 1999 to monitor the military and security situation in Sierra Leone as well as supervise the disarmament and demobilization of former combatants in the civil war. After providing a background on the war in Sierra Leone, the chapter outlines UNOMSIL’s mandate and evaluates its operational achievements and limitations, particularly with respect to human rights and in providing legitimacy for the ECOWAS Ceasefire Monitoring Group (ECOMOG).
