Abstract and Keywords

This chapter explores the United Nations Operation in Mozambique (ONUMOZ), a peacekeeping mission established by the UN Security Council in December 1992 to help secure a lasting peace in Mozambique following the civil war between the government and the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO). After providing a background on the civil war in Mozambique and the peace agreement that was signed by the government and RENAMO in Rome in October 1992, the chapter outlines ONUMOZ’s mandate and examines how and why, despite numerous obstacles, its mission was successful. It also considers the lessons that can be learned from the experience of ONUMOZ.
