Abstract and Keywords

The promotion and protection of democracy and human rights has become a central feature of an increasing number of regional organizations. Parallel with this expansion, academic literature on this subject has grown in the last decades. This chapter assesses the literature on regional institutions and democracy governance. It examines which regional organizations have come to promote democracy governance and the causes for this emergence, including demands for credible commitments at the domestic level and the supply of governance mechanisms from organizations. It addresses how institutions are called upon to function in this area and whether those calls have been effective. It argues that some causal mechanisms have been more fully specified and empirically supported than others. Finally, the chapter tackles directions for research, plotting what should be fruitful avenues for future inquiry, including increasing cross-regional comparisons and firmer foundations in theories of comparative politics.

Keywords: democracy, regional organizations, human rights, democracy governance, comparative politics, domestic politics
