Abstract and Keywords
This chapter explores some of the progressive interventions and doctrinal shifts meant to promote (hetero)sexual autonomy. Drawing on feminist insights and examples from England and Wales, it discusses three particular arenas in which criminal law has played a key role in delineating the parameters of permissible sexual interaction: rape, prostitution, and those of BDSM activity and “risky” sex. The chapter argues that, despite the doctrinal acknowledgments of personal freedom and autonomy, there is still a long way to go before sexual expression can truly make significant headway, especially when it comes to addressing the excesses of hetero-normative and patriarchal sexuality.
