Abstract and Keywords

This article examines Wordsworth’s identity as professional author, including his relations with his patrons and publishers, his late role as poet laureate, and his attempts to influence the workings of the literary marketplace via advertisements, prefaces, and intervention in debates about literary copyright. This article suggests that Wordsworth embraced certain consistent principles about authorship over the course of his varied career: A great poet was a servant of the greater good, it was acceptable for such a poet to seek material rewards as long as money did not compromise his vision, and such rewards, whether granted by a reading public or by sympathetic individuals, were well deserved.
