Abstract and Keywords
This article provides an overview of the institutional structure of the business system of Taiwan. It explores the role of the state, financial system, ownership and corporate governance, the internal structure of the firm (management), employment relations, education and skills formation, inter-company relations (networks), and social capital. It highlights key ingredients inherent in Taiwan’s business system and outlines the historical contours of its transformation. Although the business system has undergone drastic change in the past two decades, the current state of its various dimensions still bears the historical mark and lasting consequences of a resilient traditional legacy. This article contributes directly to the business systems and varieties of capitalism literatures and identifies institutional contingencies for comparative and international social science research in general.
