Abstract and Keywords

This article examines the works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge relevant to science. It explains that Coleridge, for most of his adult life, had been an assiduous student of several scientific disciplines, ranging from geology to chemistry to physiology. The article argues that Coleridge never separated his poetical and philosophical efforts from ongoing commitment to the hard facts of nature, and that his stay with physician James Gillman in Highgate, England provided him with the opportunity to learn more about science.

Eric G. Wilson

Eric G. Wilson is Thomas H. Pritchard Professor of English at Wake Forest University. He is author of several books on British and American Romanticism, including Coleridge's Melancholia, The Spiritual History of Ice, and Emerson's Sublime Science. His more recent work has focused on the persistence of Romanticism in modern popular culture, mainly in film. This work has resulted in The Strange World of David Lynch and Secret Cinema. His most recent research has produced Against Happiness, an exploration of the role of melancholy in contemporary American culture.
