Abstract and Keywords
This article examines critical approaches to change, beginning by briefly reviewing existing approaches. It then argues that a critical approach to change is distinctive because it is reflexive, performative, and registers struggles. Next the article provides an account of four key sites of change: identity, organizational processes, fields, and social dynamics. It concludes by outlining some shortcomings in critical accounts of change, and areas for future investigation.
Glenn Morgan is Professor of International Management at Cardiff Business School. His research interests concern the impact of globalization on institutions, multinationals, and governance and how this relates to changes in the organization of capitalism as a global economic system. He has published in a range of international journals such as Organization Studies, Journal of Management Studies, Human Relations, Economy and Society, and Organization. André Spicer is Professor of Organizational Behaviour at Cass Business School, City University, London. He has published widely on power and politics in and around organizations. His books include Unmasking the Entrepreneur and Contesting the Corporation. Currently he is working on a project examining stupidity in organizations.
