Abstract and Keywords

This article aims to present a broad view of grammaticalisation phenomena in Brazilian Portuguese language. It provides a concise analysis of a number of different clines of grammaticalization, focusing on the development of pronouns, auxiliaries, and connectives. The theoretical framework used in these studies follows the proposals presented in recent work on grammaticalization that highlight the intersection between grammaticalization theory and construction grammar. Two major mechanisms usually associated with grammaticalisation are metaphorisation and metonymisation.

Mário Eduardo T. Martelotta

Mário Eduardo T. Martelotta was Professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) until his untimely death in April 2011. He had a Masters Degree and a PhD in Linguistics from that university, and was coordinator of the Discourse and Grammar Research Group at UFRJ with Professor Maria Maura Cezario. His publications include editing the Manual de linguística (Contexto, 2008) andLinguística funcional (DP&A, 2003), as well as numerous articles on linguistic change, grammaticalization, word order, and Portuguese adverbs.

Maria Maura Cezario

Maria Maura Cezario is Professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). She holds a Master's Degree and a PhD in Linguistics from that university, and is coordinator of the Discourse and Grammar Research Group at UFRJ with Professor Mário Martelotta. Her publications include the books Manual de linguística (Contexto, 2008), Linguística funcional (DP&A, 2003), with other Brazilian professors, and articles on linguistic change, grammaticalization, word order, and Portuguese adverbs and verbs.
