This article examines the experience of those whose appearance is changed as the result of a traumatic event. It focuses particularly on burn injuries. It discusses the psychological and social impact of burn injury, impact on body image and self-esteem, impact on social interactions and relationships, and influences on post-burn recovery and outcome. It highlights the particular challenges that are presented when a person leaves the confines of a hospital environment and starts to reintegrate into community and society.
