Abstract and Keywords

This article explores the history of American federalism and the literature on relations between state governments and the national government. The author explores the evolving nature of the federalist system as well as changing perceptions on American federalism among social science researchers. Specific elements examined include national government influence on state policy making, state influence on national policy making, the consequences of centralization versus decentralization, and future research directions for the subfield.
